Line Drive:
A ball which is hit in the infield or directly to a fielder.
Mound:
The hill a player stands on while pitching.
No Hitter:
A game which concludes and during which the pitcher pitches so skilfully that no batter is able to make a run successfully to a base.
Offense:
The Team who is on the field batting.
Out:
A call by the Umpire that disallows a runner to reach a base successfully.
Outfield:
The area on the playing field outside the infield and on the back edge of the Home Run fence.
Outfielder:
A fielder who assumes a position in the outfield.
Passed Ball:
A pitched ball that the catcher is unable to catch enabling the runner to advance to a base.
Pitch:
When the pitcher throws a ball to the batter.
Pitcher:
The defensive player who pitches the ball to the batter.
Run:
The score made by an offensive player who safely crosses Home Plate.
Runner:
An offensive player who advances, touches, or returns to a base.
Safe:
A call made by the Umpire announcing that a runner is entitled to a base to which he has advanced.
Steal:
This is a legal move by a runner. It is an attempt to advance to a base without the batter hitting the ball or without a base reached because of 4 balls.
Stolen Base:
This is a successful advance to a base without the batter hitting the ball or without a base being reached because of 4 balls.
Strike:
A call by the Umpire when a pitch is made and the batter swings and misses. Strikes can also be called if the ball passes through the strike zone and the batter does not swing at it; if the ball touches the batter as he swings at it; or if the batter hits the ball and it is legally caught by the catcher.
Strike Zone:
The area over the Home Plate between the batter’s armpits and knees when the batter is in position to bat.
Top:
The first half of an inning.
Umpire:
The official who enforces the rules of the game and makes judgement calls on plays.
Walk:
When a batter is able to advance a base because of 4 consecutive balls.
